Bangkok University’s AI for Student Retention Innovation Wins Outstanding Award in Student Development
Congratulations to A. Piya Waraboonthavisuk and A. Witchukorn Kanthintara, members of the Platform Development Division, Research and Educational Innovation Development Unit, Bangkok University, who received the Outstanding Innovation for Student Development Award for their project AI for Student Retention. The award was presented at the 2025 National Conference on Student Development, organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.
The AI for Student Retention project leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze student data across 18 variables to predict drop out risks among first-year students. The system classifies students into two groups: At-Risk and Retention, using XGBoost modeling combined with Explainable AI (SHAP), which highlights key influencing factors such as participation in university activities, GPA, and tuition payment status. The model achieved an accuracy rate of 86.84%, enabling faculty and universities to monitor and support students more effectively in real time. This innovation also serves as a foundation for developing future systems that enhance teaching, learning, and educational management.
